Mateu Alemany has everything to be very important at Barcelona: he is a very good friend of Joan Laporta﹙so he has his full trust﹚, has vast experience and a great reputation in La Liga, and will have a central role in the sporting structure.
Alemany joined his local club Mallorca aged 20 and was there across almost 3 decades (even being president during a period), collecting their biggest triumph yet in the 2003 Copa del Rey. He is a Madrid fan, but that shouldn’t worry us. In 2000, he rejected an offer from Madrid to join in a top role. Between 2017 and 2019, he was fundamental in the successes of Valencia.
The 57-year-old stands out for his know-how, discretion, and calmness to control the situation and not make rushed decisions and missteps. He has a friendly personal approach in public relationships, and Alemany is the best person Laporta could dream of to be Barça’s face in front of La Liga, other institutions and international events. He gets on well with Javier Tebas and Florentino Perez.
Few people know the market like him, whose move to Barcelona is the culmination of his brilliant career. He will have a major importance under Laporta: he will be the director of football, will play a big part in planning the squad and negotiating the deals, will represent Barça institutionally, and will oversee the methodology, scouting and La Masia areas. He will not be alone: Ramon Planes may be the technical secretary, and Jordi Cruyff the technical director. What the differences in power and duties will be, we will possibly find out as part of the new structure in April.
